The Vibrant Spirit of the Polkadraai Hills
Named after an ancient Greek drinking game where guests would flick the last drops of wine at a target, Kottabos is the high-energy, "experimental" label from the Boschkloof estate. This Chenin Blanc is sourced from old bush vines grown in the decomposed granite soils of Stellenbosch. The winemaking involves minimal intervention and extended time on the lees, resulting in a wine that is texturally fascinating and vibrantly alive. It is a modern, crunchy, and soulful expression of South Africa’s signature white grape.
Appearance - A bright, pale straw yellow with a subtle, unfiltered cloudiness.
Nose - A fresh and slightly wild bouquet. Aromas of crunchy green apple and white pear are layered with notes of honeysuckle, wet wool, and a distinct, stony mineral freshness.
Palate - Medium-bodied with a remarkable tension and a slightly pithy, textured mouthfeel. The palate is led by a core of bright orchard fruit and citrus, underscored by a clean, saline acidity that provides incredible nerve. It finishes with a lingering note of ginger and a savory, yeast-driven complexity.
Pairings - Gindara Saikyo Yaki, Teppan Live Boston Lobster, Iberico Pork with Yuzu, Aburi Engawa, Chicken Teriyaki.
Service - Serve at 10–12°C. To experience the full spectrum of its textural complexity and "granitic" minerality, avoid serving this wine too cold. Allowing it to warm slightly in the glass reveals its hidden layers of spice and floral depth.
